Free The Five - East Timorese Lawyers
Dili, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) East Timorese Lawyer Assocaition Chairman Jose Camoes demanded freedom for five Cuban antiterrorists imprisoned in the United States, in a message to US President Barack Obama.
In the document, which was accessed by Prensa Latina, Camoes said the US president can release the Cuban antiterrorist fighters from prison, because the Peace Nobel Price he received is a tool to free them.
The Five, as Fernando Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Antonio Guerrero are known throughout the world, have remained confined to US prisons since 1998, serving harsh sentences for warning their country about plans by terrorist groups based in Miami, Florida.
The East Timorese lawyer said expectations increased with the end of Geroge W. Bush's government and Obama's arrival at the White House, something that many considered impossible.
He asserted that "the East Timorese Lawyer Association has believed that you, who can take new actions in line with the spirit of freedom of the Latin American people and take the fears of terrorism away from them, can free them too."
"I believe that you, Obama, can do it in the year 2010," said Camoes, also on his own behalf, in the message written in Tetum and English languages.
